Seniore's Pizza - Calgary

You may have heard me say this before but I think Calgary has some really great pizza places, definitely better than Montreal in my opinion. I have already recommended A Pizza Plus, a family-owned pizza shop in the community I grew up in that is my favourite pizza spot in Calgary to this day but today I introduce an iconic Calgary pizza spot called Seniore’s Pizza. This place is hugely popular amongst young people so you may have already heard of it but if not read on to find out what makes this place so special.

What is donair (and what is donair pizza)?

If you aren’t from Canada, you may not be familiar with the term “donair” because this dish actually originates in Canada! It comes from the Turkish doner kebab which is vertically cooked meat on a spit and is found at Middle Eastern doner/shawarma shops around the world. Supposedly, in the 70s a Greek man in Halifax was struggling with his gyros business (gyros being another meat similar to doner) so he decided to develop and market his own doner recipe and served it in Lebanese flatbread along with a sweet white sauce.

This dish exploded in popularity and began being referred to as donair around Canada as opposed to doner due to the way that Canadians pronounced the dish, and the sweet white sauce became known as “donair sauce”. Today, donair is the official food of Halifax and has expanded across Canada, with each city having a bunch of donair shops!

With the success of donair I suppose someone thought, why not make a donair pizza? Thus, the donair pizza was born, supposedly in Halifax as well but I cannot find an exact source for the origin of donair pizza. This is generally a pizza with cheese, donair sauce, and donair with potentially some other sauces and vegetables. This may sound pretty weird, and it is, and it may sound pretty heavy, and it is, but I think it is absolutely a must try if you’ve never had it and I think Seniore’s does it best!

This place is so popular in fact (especially late night because it is open until 2am on weekdays and 4am on Friday and Saturday) that I have never been without there being a lineup outside and they recently expanded the interior! If you don’t have time to wait, definitely call in at least an hour in advance.

What should I order from Seniore's Pizza - Calgary?

Donair Pizza

This post is essentially dedicated to spreading the word about donair pizza so of course when you visit you need to try the donair pizza. The beef donair pizza is the classic but if you prefer you can also get the chicken donair, both are great. I will say though, this pizza DEFINITELY isn’t for everyone, I would say it’s one of those things where you will probably either love it or hate it.

It is also pretty heavy, so as opposed to getting a whole donair pizza (unless you are with lots of friends) I would go for just one or two slices of the donair pizza. I would say one slice makes you feel like you’ve eaten two slices of American-style pizza or 3 slices of Neapolitan-style pizza hahah. The slices are also $4 if I am not mistaken which for the portion size is pretty good in my opinion. To summarize, try the donair pizza, don’t get too much, don’t hate me if you don’t like it, thank me if you become obsessed 😉.

Greek Special

If you want a vegetarian pizza then you can still find some options at Seniore’s, my favourite being the Greek special! This is again a pretty unique type of pizza but trust me guys once you’ve had a pizza with feta cheese you will fall in love. Aside from that amazing feta cheese the peppers, tomatoes, and garlic perfectly round out this pizza. My only critique would be that the olives can be a little too salty but I almost always have this complaint with Greek olives and most of the people I know don’t really seem to mind.

Chicken Special

I have to end off with a chicken pizza because chicken is definitely my protein of choice when it comes to pizzas. This pizza is cheesy, the marinated chicken has awesome flavour, and the vegetables round out the slice perfectly. I would say that the Greek Special and the Chicken Special are probably tied for my favourite pizzas at Seniore’s, no disrespect to the donair pizzas they are amazing but these two are more suited to my tastes for sure.

Pretty much a Calgary landmark at this point, Seniore’s is a must try spot in Calgary for a unique pizza experience. Not only are their pizzas amazing and unique but they also offer a lot of customization too if you’re picky, having thin, thick and gluten free crust as well as make your own pizzas. The portions are awesome at the price point too as the pizza slices are pretty hefty. They also have salads, pita wraps, wings, and pasta if someone you are with isn’t in the mood for pizza (although I haven’t tried any of these so I can’t say if they’re good or not).

That is all for this post, checkout my A Pizza Plus post for another must visit pizza spot in Calgary and checkout my other blog posts for more foodie content. Make sure to also follow me on my social medias to see what amazing restaurants I am going to visit next!

I immigrated to Canada when I was 12 years old and was quickly intrigued by all of the different cuisines that were available for me to try.

The diversity in Canada was fascinating to me as I had never been exposed to so many cuisines all in one place.

I started posting on social media to share my love for food and travel with the rest of the world.

My goal is to experience every culture through my travel and food blogs/vlogs whilst sharing my journey with those of you that have similar interests!
